MOSQUES IN GOA

There are some 26 mosques in Goa India. Two of the mosques are renowned. The characteristic Muslim style with the dome, tower and architecture has been maintained.

Jama Masjid

Jama Masjid is at Sanguem, 25 kilometers from Margao. This was built in the last century and has been renovated in 1959. The architecture wins attention for elegance and simplicity. There are two impressive towers and four minars. There are domes on minars. The Muslim festivals are celebrated in devotion and spirit here.

Safa Masjid

Safa Masjid is situated in Ponda. This is the biggest of all mosques in Goa. This was constructed in 1590 by Ibrahim Adilshan of Bijapur. The tank like pond and the garden surrounding this is magnificent. This was ruined by the Portuguese later. The two festivals, Id-ul-Fitr and Id-ul-Zuha are celebrated with devotion and a big crowd gathers here.

Namajgah

Situated on the picturesque hill of Bicholim is the Namazgah built by the famous Mughal Emperor Akbar. The sepulcher of Hazrat Abdullah Khan Shahid has been here. The Maratha King Sambhaji prayed for victory over the Portuguese here.
